Kia and Hyundai are two South Korea-based automakers

Kia and Hyundai are two South Korea-based automakers with a strong corporate connection, in that Hyundai Motor Co. currently owns around 34% of Kia Motors. Vehicles from both brands selectively share platforms, powertrains, and other components, but are far from being just “badge engineered.” Both brands operate independently, maintaining their own engineering and design studios, as well as sales and marketing departments.

Hyundai models adopt complex and flowing exterior treatments, while Kia vehicles are generally sportier and bolster the brand’s appeal to a younger audience.

Kia and Hyundai remain steadfast in selling entry-level autos. Kia takes this battle with two models, the subcompact Rio and the compact Forte. Hyundai brings four model lines to the battle, the subcompact Accent, compact Elantra, the sporty Veloster, and the Ioniq hybrid/plug-in hybrid/electric models.

Kia takes the midsize car segment with the Optima, which receives a U.S. News overall score of 8.6 out of 10. The sedan’s more expressively styled relation at Hyundai, the Sonata, comes in half a point short with a score of 8.1.
